Just heard from the WBS lot the following:

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE FIFTH:! As with most things when it comes to the Police, these plans could change, if they do I will let you know ASAP. Darren.

ROAD CLOSURES: - The statutory authorities have reviewed the crowd management arrangements for the Fifth and in their wisdom, despite our considerable objections have introduced an outer road closure. Roads will be closed at the following points at 5pm:
• A27/A277 at the Kingston roundabout
• C7/Wellgreen Lane Nr Kingston
• A275/B2116 Offham Garage
• Road into Church Lane/Malling Hill
• Road into Lewes at Cuilfall Tunnel Roundabout
No access will be allowed through the road closures by ANY VEHICLE after this time. It makes no difference if you are a society member, live there, work there or are visiting friends, they will not let you through. So, it is very important that all members are in town BEFORE 5PM!! Any later and you will not get in by vehicle. Our first procession is at 5:30pm so I hope this should not affect too many members. I can only say that we have done everything we can to try to prevent these road closures being put in place and are very disappointed that they are going ahead.

How far is Offham Garage to Lewes Darren?  Confused

A long walk! Problem being there's bugger all anyone can do about what the police are doing. All the police need to do is qoute section whatever the number is, which means they can basically do what they want to stop you from getting to a certain destintation. Its the one they use alot at football matches and any big demo's to stop people from travelling, and its completely legal.

Good thing the Ouse isnt closed, boat from Lindfield to Lewes  Laughing

Just had a thought. Looking at the road closure points, its looks like I can still get into town by the tunnel, as the road is closed from that point. Just meansa trek through Lewes which is got to be better than a trek from Offham

My reading was that the road was closed at the roundabout on the bypass, not the other end.  The problem you will have is how to get there!  Down to the A27 via Brighton and along or right around Ringmer, Glynde and along.  It is a hell of a way whichever.

Darren,

Assuming you can get to the A27, how about being dropped off in the layby at the back end of Priory school.  I think you can get across the playing fields and that will bring you out near the train station.  Could be worth a look first though.

Good thinking there Paul, there are laybys on both sides- one takes you past Southovers firesite, the other past the Cliffe shed and firesite. You'll definitely need a torch, I'm not sure how steep the embankments are either.

All that just to get in Laughing

Has anyone seen the nice Lewes Bonfire leaflet produced by Lewes District Council re. all the road closures yet? According to the leaflet it says nothing about the roads being shut at Hamsey garage or earwig corner. If anyone would like a copy drop me a pm and I'll email one to you.

not quite, when in previous years has there been such a wide area cordon of lewes that will be enforce for BOTH Visitors & Locals, it also says there are less trains being run in and out of lewes,

So no its not quite the same also from the looks of it some societies may not make it (with work etc being a week day) and the shut off being 5 FOR EVERY ONE

Hence why at Lindfield we have seen an increase in visiting societies wanting to come this year.

Pushing a potential problem from one corner to another, Just have to wait and see how the world turns this year. The 5pm town closures look the same as other years as the processions start shortly after 5pm anyway but have to say the 7pm closures further out are different.  Rolling Eyes

By the sounds of things listening to the radio at work today there are certainly a few unhappy residents of Lewes out there.

Could there be a backlash from the public against bonfire in Lewes? Maybe this was the idea in the first place by the authorities to stir up abit more anti bonfire feeling. Or am I just being a cynic?

I'd be peed off if I was a on bonfire type resident of Lewes being told I couldnt enter Lewes after 5pm and couldnt get my home. What hapens if you work say in Brighton/Haywards Heath/Newhaven and other surrounding towns and don't finish until 5pm and have a arse of a boss that won't let you finish work early? Simple answer is you're screwed! I can see this being one big screw up and back firing big time. Like Forrest says if it does you can see bonfire bearing the grunt of discontent.

Yes Forrest some may say you're being cynical, but its a valid point to have in mind.

I just hope the residents realise that it is not the bonfire societies that have done this Exclamation
