Rugby Tops

I don't want to get into the hoops v stripes debate again (or indeed lines Mail man! Wink ), but looking through Forrests pictures of Fletching I noticed that there were two societies there wearing non striped rugby shirts. I dont have a problem with rugby shirts themselves but wonder why these societies do not have striped ones? I do not wish to offend but it does look like we are being joined by the local rugby clubs as opposed to other bonfire societies  Confused
rockape65

Not only that but some bloke came up to us and said "oh you're wearing the same colours as us" and i see in forrests photo's theres a woman smuggler in our colours in the procession!!! it's becoming a free for all, lol.

V

Can I say something !
The Plotter

Can we name and shame?? Oh well im going to anyway!!

Chailey were wearing their yellow and black quarters and were at one point in the procession called Chailey Rugby Club!! Surprise surprise!! Laughing

And Isfield were adorning nice all bright red rugby shirts although to their defence they did explain that they didnt get time to organise knitted jumpers so maybe we can let them off as they are the newboys....just this year anyway. Evil or Very Mad

My personal opinion is that Rugby shirts should be banned from bonfire, they are too modern and very much show an untraditional society and are probably not fire proof anyway!!

Get knitting CHAILEY and ISFIELD!!!!
V

I`m still zipped up ! . . . Gonna be a good boy here
Firecracker

I dont mind the rugby tops, as we all know it can be hard to get hold of knitted jumpers and if you have a new member it is a good alternative until a knitted one can be made for them. It would just be nice if they had stripes, plenty of colour combinations left to choose from  Very Happy
rockape65

As the plotter says, Chailey have always worn Rugby shirts and Isfield are just starting out and have more important issues to resolve so fair do's this year, i'm sure Isfield will stun us with their shiny new stripes next season. Also please remember one or two members on this site have been downright rude about anyone outside their little elitist world wearing stripes, so maybe they thought it better to avoid the issue? But I do agree with you Firecracker it would be nice to see everyone in stripes, it doesn't matter how young your society is I believe once you join the Bonfire community that entitles you to wear your stripes just like a new recruit joining the Army earns his or her beret after passing out.
Ed Can Do

I couldn't even tell you what Firle's official stripes colours were as nobody wears them! Possibly it's black and white but don't quote me on that. Our standard not-dressing-up-dressing-up outfit is army greens, although there are fewer and fewer of those every year as our sailor contingent swells, mainly I suspect as the kids want to get out of carrying all the spare torches...
Ghoti

Is there any history to the colours of stripes, or to stripes in general?
Firecracker

I'm sure Forrest will know or could find out, I will ask him  Very Happy
The Plotter

Alot of the newer society's choose whatever is available except Southover, hence i guess Chailey going for quarters. There may be history behind it but i guess smugglers would have worn darker colours and not red and yellow stripes.

Right here we go then for abit of history on your stripes/hoops or whatever you want to call them. As far as I can make out black & white that are worn by Cliffe are the original colours as they would be the same as what the smugglers would ware. As for each society and their choice of colours I will add what I know below,

Lindfield - Navy Blue/White - as close as you can get to the original colours.

Burgess Hill - Green/Black - Burgess Hill Town colours

Southover - Red/Black - Colours of Lewes Town FC

Fletching - Lewes Colours Combined - Just a laugh

Hastings - Gold, blue & Red - colours of the Cinque Ports
smithey

and we have are stripes with pride
lbs.me.uk

first off thanks to the plotter for the dig at littlehampton
(AS IF THE FEW THAT HAVE TRIED TO INTRODUCE THEM HAVE NOT HAD ENOUGH PROBLEMS)
Second
I can think off BRIGHTER Colours Rotherfield (which I think are great) come to mind Hi Vis Green, RED ,YELLOW AND PURPLE Hell even south heightons are quite bright.

Third The image of the smuggler is a romatisised idead TRUE Smugglers in history would have worn over coats, hessian masks and general drab colours to keep them hidden

AND IF YOU LOOK BACK IN BONFIRE HISTORY MOST DIPECTIONS OF EARLY BONFIRE SMUGGLER ARE IN BLUE AND WHITE AS PER THE BROUROUGHS COLOURS EX ROYAl NAVAL PRESS GANG ATIRE
Firecracker

I did wonder that about the blue and white stripes, as our big banner with print of a painting has us in blue and white hence why our stripes are like they are. Although I dont know how old the original painting is  Confused

please can we not start to cause bad feeling about what colours of the stripes Societies wear it is up to them
so Here is a list of Societies that wear striped jumpers and usually white trousers to look like Smugglers. Though Smugglers never worn a distinctive costume it’s a bit like all pirates having a wooden leg, eye patch and a parrot on their shoulder.

Name of Society

Barcombe                   Red & Black Stripped Jumpers
Borough                                Blue & White Striped Jumpers
Burgess Hill                Black & Green Striped Jumpers
Chailey                                Black & yellow 1/4Rugby Shirts
Cliffe                                        Black & White Striped Jumpers
Commercial Square     Yellow & Black Striped Jumpers
Crowborough                Red & blue
Southover                          Red & black
Eastbourne                Red white & blue Striped Jumpers
Firle                                dark blue and gold striped jumpers
Fletching                                A mix of all the Lewes  stripes
hailsham                                   black and gray stripes
Hastings                     Red, Blue & Gold Striped Jumpers
Lindfield                                Navy Blue & white Stripped Jumpers
Littlehampton                Red and yellow stripped jumpers
Maresfield                     Maroon & orange stripped jumpers
Nevil Juvenile                            Green & White Stripped Jumpers
Newick                                Black & Red Striped Jumpers
Rye                                Dr Syn type Smugglers
Southstreet                brown and white Striped Jumpers
South Heighton                Royal blue & yellow Stripped Jumpers
Waterloo                                Red & White Striped Jumpers

and i do not care if they are bright or dark stripes or a mix of both as look as they help keep bonfire alive in sussex

Still Zipped !

maybe rugby tops could be the start of a new tradition  Smile

Cant say zipped any more its to painfull . . At least with rugby tops there would be no huffy puffys over stripes or hoops . . Sorry  Twisted Evil

Thanks GF4PM, that explination makes sense to me.  And with Borough having blue or the navy ties it in nicely.  Is this your hypothosis or have you got any references?

Well done V - 3 days!  I could feel the pressure building up from here with you trying to keep quiet Very Happy

But the question is would they be stripes, hooped, lines or toroidal rugby tops?
The Plotter

Dont start that aagain Ghoti Laughing

Sorry lbs i wasnt actually having a dig at Littlehampton, or anybody for that matter. Its a personal opinion and i feel rugby shirts are for rugby and not bonfire! Evil or Very Mad

We are all kindred society's so there should be no hard feelings over this subject between us. The comment made to Chailey bought a laugh from them in good spirits so good on em!! Smile

Good bit of resurch GF4PM, and now even Firl members will know what stripes they wear!!! Laughing

Sorry Plotter I do get a bit definsive when it comes to littlehampton RED and YELLOW/Gold (Depending on who I am talking to also gold sounds more posh)
any how we only eva had one rugby shirt as a proto (was a waterloo shirt and a pot of dylon fabric paint)
as for GF4PM its a good little table but 2 points i would like to make 1 firles jumpers seem to have a big rams head knitted into the back and 2 missed hailsham in there black and gray stripes mr Rockape will not be pleased

It's ok lbs, i'm cool,  I make exceptions for the elderly, GF4PM can't help his dementia, i'm surprised he hasn't put Newhaven, Landport or St Annes Bonfire societies on there!! It makes me sad to see him slipping away like this!!  Sad

Otherwise I agree totally with the plotter, the smugglers attire is our kindred badge and part of what bonds us and be should be worn with pride whether you're a member of a brand new society or one with 150 years of tradition. No one should put pressure on those societies that choose to wear Rugby shirts but hopefully they will eventually decide to take the leap themselves and invest in Guernseys, I can't imagine there's much price difference between the two.

On the hoops, stripes, lines, barcodes issue i'm just gonna call em Guernseys from now. So there!!
The Plotter

Nicely put Rockape. Very Happy

Hope all those coming to Newick on sat enjoy themselves and wear their stripey hooped lines barcoded Guernsey Rugby shirt knitted jumpers with pride.....whoever you are with! Razz

It's ok mate, we're used to it, we're always getting missed off of lists, until the beginning of this year we thought we were called "any other visiting societies" lol. Hence the unofficial motto we've borrowed from Millwall FC "No one likes us but we don't care"  Laughing
