Sorry, Eastbourne's event in Polegate has been cancelled. This evening we have been told that at a meeting between representatives of Wealden District Council and Sussex Police it was decided to refuse permission for a rolling road closure on the 22nd September to accomodate our event.
We only found out about this because our Chair got a phone call from one of the Polegate Councillors, who had lobbied hard in our favour. This decision has come as quite a blow to us all and I know it will be a considerable disappointment to all those we'd invited as well as the people of Polegate.
There were mutterings about next year and about possible 'sabotage' by Eastbourne Council, but I think in the end it came down to the Police not wanting to give up their free weekend. More news as it becomes available, but right now I just want to get really effing pissed.
Sorry, Mercurius.

This attidude by the authorities really makes me want to scream & swear alot. No doubt the members of Eastbourne are feeling the same way.
I'm really sorry to hear that they won't let you run this year. Someone somewhere really must have it in for you lot down in Eastbourne.
Of course you could still go ahead and do it. As they technically can't stop a march/procession along the roads as long as you don't stop walking. Easier said that done I know.
Fingers crossed for next year, as I was really looking forward to going to Eastbourne this year.

You know it wouldn't surprise me if this isn't about us running on the free weekend and the police not wanting to give up their 'quiet time'. In addition to the marshalling bollocks they say in one moment that our route goes through narrow residential streets (Which are good enough for the Polegate Carnival incidentally) but go on to state their willingness to accomodate and assist with a procession down the same route next year.
We'll pick ourselves up and start planning for 2008 of course, and we have got quite a bit in the kitty from the colossal fundraising drive we'd done this year. At least we'd not sent out the cheque for the first tranche of the insurance yet. So, assuming we can address the concerns of all concerned parties we are quite strongly placed for next year.
In my own opinion this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise given all the chopping and changing we've had to do with our own Council blowing hot and cold and delays getting insurance cover. We only got Polegate's offer a couple of months ago and were pushed to do all the planning and logistics that in truth should have been done around April.
I know other societies, sponsors etc must think we'd led them a merry dance over this, what with letters having gone out from our officials having to be re-written and followed up with corrections to ensure that any info is current. This must have been a pain for recipient societies to have to deal with and all that can be said is bear with us. We've got a friendly local authority on our doorstep that wants us and we know who's open to sponsor us next year.
