UNESCO protected practice

Did anything ever come from the application to make Sussex Bonfire a UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation) protected practice?

My guess is that it was started about this time last year.  Has there been any developments?  Is it still ongoing?

As far as I'm aware nothing has come of this to date. all to do with red tape/politics.

Ive been told that it is still being worked on
forrest

I have some news on this subject after Alan Smith from the SBC contacted me regarding this subject after seeing this thread on the forum.

Indeed it is still ongoing. However, the government is not
enthusiastic about signing up to the UNESCO protocol, apparently questioning the legal implications of the expression 'intangible cultural heritage'. Also when this was discussed, it was the start of the global econimic crisis, Afghanistan plus there is a general election looming so it dosen't look to be high on our goverment list of things to do.

Keith Leech from Hastings was the man within Sussex Bonfire who started to get the ball rolling. The people he spoke to outside of Sussex Bonfire were keen that the UK signed up to the agreement to protect other historic cultural events in the country along with Sussex Bonfire.

Keith has managed to get the MP's from Lewes, Battle, Hastings & Rye on our side. Eastbourne MP won't as he, by the the sounds of things is against bonfire. Once things have settled down with the goverment, Keith hopes to pick this up again next summer.

So watch this space.

Thanks for the update Forrest and Alan.  And good luck to Keith and his attempts.
